Senate Confirms Cabinet Member Before Recess

Senate Banking Committee holds recess hearing to advance other nominees.

The U.S. Senate narrowly confirmed Keith Sonderling as Secretary of the Department of Labor this week. The narrow vote was held on Wednesday just before the upper chamber recessed

The formerly acting secretary said he was honored to be confirmed and that “America’s workers and job creators are the greatest in the world. I will work every day to ensure they have a Department of Labor that is accountable, effective, and responsive to their needs.”

After the Senate’s recess, the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee Chair Tim Scott of South Carolina held a confirmation hearing for nominees for assistant secretary positions in the Departments of the Treasury and of Housing and Urban Development, as well as for roles in the Export-Import Bank of the United States. While Senate rules allow hearings to be held outside of recess, it has generally been a rare occurrence.

“We have four prepared nominees and we have a country that wants us to do our jobs,” Senator Scott said. “President Trump needs a qualified group of people in place to carry out his agenda, and the American people deserve leaders who understand whom they work for.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Sonderling as he transitions from the role of deputy and acting secretary to formal Cabinet member.
  • For members of the Senate as they work in their districts during the October recess.
  • For the senators who will campaign for reelection in next month’s midterms.
  • For voters to receive insight from the Lord regarding the candidates for whom they cast ballots.
